THE M135
0 min reading time
A long bonnet, short overhangs, a wide wheelbase and a passenger cell set well back with the characteristic Hofmeister kink in the rear side window graphic: the BMW M135 xDrive is the M among compact sports cars and makes it clear at first glance that it intends to take pole position. With unmistakable M design features, powerful M TwinPower Turbo technology of the latest generation and M specific chassis components, the top athlete takes on every driving challenge.

A real powerhouse.

Chassis and M TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine of the BMW M135 xDrive

Spontaneous response, continuous power delivery and outstanding revving power are the hallmarks of the most powerful version of the latest modular 4-cylinder petrol engine. M specific features include a particularly robust crankshaft drive, optimised oil supply to the cooling duct pistons and new main bearing shells and covers. The latest M TwinPower Turbo technology includes increased turbocharging and intercooling as well as dual fuel injection. The 2.0-litre unit develops its maximum power between 5,750 and 6,500 rpm. The maximum torque of 400 Nm is on stream between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. The spirited power delivery is accompanied by the emotive sound of the M specific exhaust system.

TECHNICAL DETAILS.

Adaptive M suspension.

The Adaptive M suspension features variable, mechanically controlled, frequency-selective shock absorbers that enhance both agility and long-distance comfort. It lowers the car by up to 8 millimetres and is combined with sport steering. In addition to speed-dependent Servotronic power steering, it also features a particularly direct rack-and-pinion transmission.

7-speed Steptronic transmission.

The automatic 7-speed Steptronic transmission with dual clutch optimises every gear change. Its closely stepped gears minimise speed jumps and shift smoothly and quickly. For more driving dynamics and shifting comfort with lower fuel consumption. Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow quick manual interventions in the gear selection process. The M Sport Boost function is also available for exceptionally rapid bursts of speed. Here, all the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest setting when the driver pulls on the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second.

BMW xDrive.

The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures that drive power is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required in any situation. The system is interlinked with the chassis control tech at all times. A hang-on clutch with electro-hydraulic control allows drive torque to be directed to the rear wheels as well in a matter of a few milliseconds, providing significantly greater traction, directional stability and sporting prowess in the M mould.

Mechanical differential lock.

The all-wheel-drive system is assisted in its task by the mechanical limited-slip differential built into the transmission. This serves to limit the difference in speed between the front wheels. It increases traction over loose terrain or in adverse weather conditions at the same time as boosting agility and handling dynamics – for maximum traction and higher cornering speeds.

M Compound brake.

The optional M Compound brake system brakes the forward thrust of the new BMW M135 xDrive particularly powerful. It features four-piston fixed calipers and 385 millimetre discs at the front and single-piston floating calipers with parking brake and 330 millimetre discs at the rear. The brake calipers are painted grey and feature the M logo.

M Technology package.

BMW M135 xDrive with M Technology Package

The powerful M Compound brakes, included in the M Technology Package.

The optionally available M Technology Package for the BMW M135 xDrive brings additional bracing elements and lightweight construction measures, plus specific chassis components that give the range-topping model bespoke performance characteristics. Particularly strong piston rods for the front shock absorbers, weight-saving aluminium anti-roll bars with extra rigidity and additional underfloor bracing elements increase steering precision and give the car noticeably more engaging responses. There is also an application for the steering and control systems. The fitment of M Compound brakes and M forged light-alloy wheels helps to reduce weight. The 19-inch wheels are fitted with sport tyres, while track tyres can be ordered as an option.

The enhanced transverse dynamics brought about by the M Technology Package and the car’s improved deceleration capability enable significantly improved lap times on the track and also make their presence keenly felt in everyday driving. The M Technology Package also includes M High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim with extended elements, plus M Sport seats with integral head restraints and an illuminated M logo in the upper section of the backrests.
