With the BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000, BMW M GmbH is setting new trends both in the art scene and in the field of sporty high-performance vehicles. Clear the stage for a unique collaboration – the first of three exclusive “BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000” vehicles hand-painted by FUTURA 2000 will have its debut at the Frieze Los Angeles Art Fair. Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW M, joined renowned artist FUTURA 2000 in unveiling the unique M2 Competition that he designed and hand-painted in the BMW M workshop in Garching.
THE BMW M2 BY FUTURA 2000.
We are very proud to have secured an internationally renowned artist like FUTURA 2000 for the design of our show car. The BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 exceeds our expectations and is a further step by BMW Individual in its collaboration with world-famous artists.
THE DESIGN.
High performance that breaks convention.
The exterior, as well as interior trim panels, of the BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 has been designed and hand-painted by the graffiti pioneer. Altogether, the New Yorker worked on the project for months, from the first design concept to the finished BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000. To achieve the unique look of this M vehicle, FUTURA 2000 applied a total of 3-4 layers of paint by using the BMW M equipment and tools for hand-painting the car. The base colour of this striking work of art is black, which is repeatedly overlaid with sparkling white dots and lightning-like lines. The recurring motif is a circular saw blade, one of FUTURA 2000 signature styles, which was applied by hand with an elaborate process.
THE INTERIOR.
In the interior, FUTURA 2000 designed and hand-painted the interior trims on the instrument panel and the centre console. In addition to the artistic elements, the two-tone M sports seats with Dakota leather in black and ivory white catch the eye, while the contrasting seams in Polar Blue set a subtle accent. The bespoke interior also includes an M sports steering wheel in Alcantara and 12 o'clock markings, as well as special door sill trims with a FUTURA 2000 signature.
I am deeply impressed by the dynamic and slightly provocative design of this piece of art. With its unique, constructive and rebellious style, FUTURA 2000 is the perfect match for our BMW M2 Competition.
THE ARTIST.
Born Leonard Hilton McGurr, FUTURA 2000 established himself as a pioneer when graffiti met the more formal gallery ecosystem in the 1980s. He quickly became known for his radical approach on the street, introducing abstraction to an entirely letter-based discipline, and found himself part of a wider art movement that included the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Dondi White. Besides his decades-long career as a contemporary artist, he has achieved great success as a commercial artist, collaborating with several well-known brands.
UNIQUE EDITION.
A high-performance work of art for M enthusiasts.
In addition to the three exclusive one-offs, there will also be a limited-edition series version inspired by this masterpiece: the BMW M2 Edition designed by FUTURA 2000. No two models will be identical as the exterior designed by FUTURA 2000 is recognisable by the painted surfaces on the front and rear aprons and the side sills. The interior trim and centre console are hand-painted by FUTURA 2000 himself. This means that as well as receiving a high-performance BMW M2 Competition vehicle, every buyer gets to own a one-of-a-kind piece of art – unique in the history of M GmbH. The special model will be available from June 2020.
