DAY #1: FROM MUNICH OVER THE OBERALP PASS – 392 KILOMETRES.

Our cars for this road trip await us in Munich. We’ll be driving 100% electric with the BMW i4 M50 and the BMW iX M60. Getting an early start would be a good idea, as the first stage is long and there are lots of reasons to take a break on the way to Switzerland.

A grandiose panorama fills the windscreen as we reach the Oberalp Pass. We decide to go for a walk to Toma Lake. Lying above Oberalp Lake, it’s seen as the source of the Rhine. Afterwards, the road snakes through the Alpine countryside to our first stopover. The 4-star Radisson Blu Hotel in Andermatt was designed in the Scandanavian style and stands at an altitude of 1,444 m, surrounded by picturesque mountain summits.

DAY #2: OVER THE FURKA PASS – 180 KILOMETRES.

On the second day, our route takes us over the Furka Pass, one of the oldest and most beautiful in Switzerland. The almost 40 km-long road was built between 1864 and 1866 and reaches an altitude of 2,429 m. As the Furka Pass is one of the highlights of the road trip, we’ll take a break here: firstly to enjoy the Alpine panorama, and secondly because there is almost nowhere on Earth where you can drive closer to a glacier.

Only about 180 m from the well-known vantage point of the abandoned Hotel Belvédère, the entrance to the Rhône glacier is easy to find. A glacier nature trail awaits, which includes a roughly 100 m-long ice tunnel with an ice chamber inside the glacier, before taking us back to the road.

On the way to our next hotel, we make another stop at Lac de Moiry, which is well worth an extended walk around the lake, where there are kayaks and SUPs for hire. Then we move on to the 5-star Hotel LeCrans, set in a quiet forest above Crans-Montana. The hotel has its own restaurant, the Michelin star-winning LeMansBlanc, with breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

DAY #3: VIA ROSENLAUI TO HONEGG – 220 KILOMETRES.

Village in the mountains

The next day we load our vehicles onto the car train in Goppenstein and travel to Kandersteg, where we continue our tour with a drive along the Thuner and Brienzer Lakes to Honegg. On the way, we pass traditional little Swiss villages in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and environs, set against impressive backdrops of towering cliffs and waterfalls.

A VALLEY, A GLACIER, A CANYON.

5-star-Hotel Villa Honegg

Another stop we highly recommend is Rosenlaui, with its fabulous views over a magnificent valley, with at one end the Rosenlaui glacier and at the other a canyon in the glacial ravine. For thousands of years, the glacial water has formed the river Weissenbach and its bed, created grottos and plunged over waterfalls into the valley. The evening sees us arrive at the 5-star hotel Villa Honegg. This luxurious abode from the early 20th century stands on the Bürgenstock mountain. From the heated infinity pool, you can take in the view of Lake Lucerne and the hotel restaurant’s terrace also has wonderful panoramas to enjoy.

DAY #4: OVER THE SUSTEN AND KLAUSEN PASSES TO MUNICH – 400 KILOMETRES.

On our last day, the route takes us back to the Susten Pass. If this isn’t spectacular enough for you, then we recommend making a short detour to Stone Lake on the West side of the pass. The road to this glacial lake is subject to charges, but it’s worth every cent. The lake is named after the Stone glacier further up the mountain. If you want to stretch your legs, take a break here – a walk in the countryside in these surroundings is a joy for all the senses.

The last highlight on our panoramic tour is the Klausen Pass, where we sum up. Switzerland offers a magnificent variety: be it water sports, hiking, the spectacular glaciers, the luxurious hotels or the sheer driving pleasure on the mountain roads.

WELL PLANNED.

On this road trip through Switzerland, it is important to bear in mind that many pass roads first open between April and June, but are closed again at the beginning of October due to snowfall. Additional charges may apply on some stretches.
