How to Drift: All-wheel drive vs rear-wheel drive.

Perfect drifts with all-wheel and rear-wheel drive - we show you how to do it.

13 November 2020

Drifting is a balancing act between traction and losing control. And how it’s done depends on what kind of drive the vehicle has. In the new video How to Drift Part 2, the racing driver and BMW Driving Experience instructor explains what’s important when drifting with the all-wheel M xDrive and rear-wheel drive. And he’s brought the ideal drift vehicle to the shoot: the BMW M8 Competition Coupé with 625hp, distributed via the iDrive setting to either all four or just the back wheels.

EXPLAINED: THE BMW M xDRIVE.

Thanks to the BMW M xDrive and the Active M Differential, sporting performance can be experienced even more intensely, whether in everyday driving or on the racetrack. The M specific technology distributes the driving power steplessly and fully variably between the front and rear axles so that the vehicle can be steered and controlled with extreme precision and safety, both when driving dynamically and in inclement weather conditions. Already in the basic setting with activated DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and 4WD, the M displays its typical agility. The M Dynamic Mode and 4WD Sport increase this agility distinctly. According to personal preference or road quality, in DSC Off mode the driver can choose between the drive options 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD. In 2WD mode the drive is confined to the rear wheels. Here, only the Active M Differential engages to distribute the power between the rear wheels with complete flexibility according to the situation in order to ensure ideal traction and driving stability. All in all, M xDrive expands the driving qualities, optimizes the handling characteristics and makes the vehicle easier to control, so that the high performance can be enjoyed even more intensely.

Drifting is the most exciting way to take a bend.

WHO IS WHO.

Stefan Landmann

Racing driver, winner of the 24-hour Nürburgring race, instructor: Stefan Landmann seldom strays from the racing line. As a class winner in 2011 in the 24-hour Nürburgring race on the notorious Nordschleife, the thoroughbred race car driver conquered one of the most demanding racetracks in the world in a BMW M3 GT4. As a certified BMW instructor, the 30-year old Austrian is the right man in the right place when it comes to translating the fascination of racing to the road. “It’s a great pleasure for me to work with people who are as car-mad as I am,” says Landmann. “I’m happy to pass on my motorsport experience.”
