Your BMW M automobile is ready for action – and you are too? Before you and your BMW M really push the envelope, you should take it slowly, because moving parts have to adjust to each other. Here are the most important tips on running in tyres and brakes. They will help you to increase the lifespan and efficiency of your BMW M model.
STEP BY STEP.
The cause: Due to the manufacturing process, brand new tyres don’t have perfect grip. Only after the first 300 km (185 mi) can they offer full road-holding. That’s how long it takes the release agents from the production process to be driven off the profile surface. Please adapt your driving style to suit these circumstances.
Brake discs and pads also need running in to avoid brake noise. They too need time to get attuned to each other. The brake system will achieve full efficiency after about 500 km (310 mi). So don’t drive under full loads until then.
To avoid noises from the brake system after running in, occasionally brake heavily. Of course only when the traffic situation allows such manoeuvres.
To avoid noises with wet brakes, the braking system can be braked dry. A few gentle decelerations from 50 to 0 km/h will suffice.
When you replace tyres or brakes, repeat the running-in procedure.
NICE TO KNOW.
More interesting facts about the tyres on your BMW M automobile.
Tyres marked with a star.
The star marking is the BMW seal of approval. All BMW tyres bearing the star marking have been developed and tested in cooperation with leading tyre manufacturers so as to guarantee their suitability for ideal performance, comfort and safety on your BMW M automobile.
Summer tyres.
At temperatures over 7° Celsius, summer tyres offer much better performance in terms of handling and speed. Summer tyres are more suited to higher temperatures because they’re made from much harder rubber mixes. This means shorter braking distances, lower roll resistance and lower fuel consumption.
Winter tyres.
At temperatures under 7° Celsius, winter tyres have many advantages. In cold weather they perform much better than summer tyres with regard to traction, road-holding in bends and brake behaviour. They are made up of softer rubber mixes and have deeper grooves and fine sipes which improve traction on wet and icy roads.
Track tyres.
Track tyres, also known as semi-slicks, are made for use on racetracks, but also fulfil requirements for normal street use. Besides the special rubber mix, their tread is also different from that of summer and winter tyres. A track tyre has fewer, larger tread blocks, which means less void ratio and thus more surface contact. As track tyres are optimized for dry racetracks, they should be used with caution on wet roads.
Runflat tyres.
BMW tyres with runflat technology will never let you down, even in the case of a breakdown. The tyre pressure control system in your BMW M will inform you immediately. Instead of forcing you to stop, it allows you to drive another 80 kilometre at up to 80 km/h. The tyres’ reinforced sidewalls stabilise your vehicle, keep it on track and allow you to drive safely to your nearest BMW Partner.
THE M CARBON CERAMIC BRAKE.
Extremely high resilience. Extreme immunity to fading. Extremely low weight and thus much more agility: The M Carbon ceramic braking system ensures impressive performance – on road or racetrack. The carbon fibre compound ceramic is also especially durable and corrosion-resistant. The optical highlight are brake callipers in matte gold featuring the M Logo. M Carbon ceramic brakes are an option available on many high-performance models from BMW M.
